Freehand Picture using a Wacom tablet

This is my first picture using only a wacom tablet and no photo. I feel there's a lot of tricks to learn! I used a layer to add my signature with help from others on Cafe Essentials.[:D]

Congratulations!  I'm still pretending that my Wacom's as easy as "really" painting - and failing at it.  I like your use of colors especially the different greens in the apple, lots of detail there. Be sure to make a print of it to frame as a keepsake. It's your first!

Hi Ellen,

Thanks for your encouraging comments. As you have said it is much harder than I thought, and this really is quite a simple picture.  Would have been much easier to do with pens and paper!  However we all have to start somewhere!

I like the apple Dianne. I think the shading of different greens is really good. It is encouraging to know that others do not find the wacom tablet pen quite the same as a brush. I am trying to teach myself to get accustomed to it and sometimes it seems ok but other times I can't quite get it to behave as I would like.

As you say there is still lots to learn but we need to practice in order to learn.

Thanks Squirrel,

I'm trying to use it all the time even with painting over the photos so that my technique with using it improves.   I would love to see other people's attempt at freehand drawing with it. I know I would appreciate their efforts given mine already shown.  It's not about how good our drawings are on this site but rather a way of helping each other out and getting encouragement and ideas.

For others that haven't had a try at it I would suggest doing something simple like an apple or pear that is quick to draw and then you can spend time on the shading, colour fill, layers etc.  I find myself re-watching tutorials for ideas.

Very good Dianne! You know, it is a lot easier to sketch with pencil and paper...Have you tried doing that, and then scanning the result to a tiff file, then opening it in painter to begin your painting? If you do your sketch as a light tonal drawing, you can get your lighting in, too.

Pen tablets can be great! And after a while, it becomes as natural as pen and paper. I got my first tablet 2 or 3 years ago. I was frusterated at first that i was actually able to draw better with a mouse. I used it for a month or so and completely gave up drawing with a pencil and when my tablet broke and I was forced to use traditional materials again, I acutally missed the tablet because I found it to be easier to use. Now I have a tablet pc where I draw directly onto the screen so it might as well be a pen and paper, haha!
